As a pissed mob guy, I respectfully submit that you are missing the obvious. Billions of dollars decided on a ref's call. 95% free throw shooter missing two "meaningless" shots and the game stays under the spread. The leagues want to keep their image until they figure out a way to cash in on gambling. |

lets face it though dr, those things are an issue regarless of the leagues accepting sports wagering. how does the possibility of a ref or player being bribed get affected by WHO is taking the wagers?
I understand it's an image thing, but i just don't see why anyone would feel their image would be tarnished by coming out and admiting that sports gambling is a GOOD thing..... |

good point zed. sometimes i wonder if democrats and republicans just take sides on topics just to offset the support that the other group has gained.... |

I think the Black Sox scandle set the relationship between pro sports ond gamblers back about 90 yrs. Look for a reconciliation in 2009. That's provided we have no more Paul Hornings or Pete Roses.
Remind me sometime to tell you why the K.C. Chiefs were taken off the board in Vegas back in the early 70's. |

i'd love to hear about that one.
i saw a special on sports gambling on hbo once where a guy claimed to have had a bunch of new york area athletes that owed him big money fucking with game outcomes.
he could have been full of shit, but it was pretty convincing.... |

Don't remember that one. If true, it serves as a super example of why corporate America avoids gambling and sports tie-ins. Too many opportunities for scandal. |

Bob Martin is credited with "inventing" the pointspread. opened up the first book in Vegas, the Brown Derby. Eventually moved to Union Plaza.
Served time in prison for interstate gambling. Made the Vegas line years before Roxy Roxborough. |

Bob was talking an the phone to every "big" book in the U.S. and Canada in the 60's and 70's. If Yks were 6/7 over Dodgers in the Series, he would hear from N.Y. guys laying off at -150 (they were charging their locals 160) and from L.A. guys laying off at +110 (they were loaded locally at even money).
The feds tapped his line and he spent time in the can. A matter of course in those days.
The main thing is, he was The Man and had outs in every major city. That's why he was the key figure in the K.C. games being taken off the board. |
