When it comes to betting, the NBA All-Star game gets about as much action as a high school, math club president.

“We see very little action on it,” says BetUSA.com’s Bill Nevin. “Any serious bettors know that the players aren’t too bothered about it and that is a bit of fun.”

It’s not surprising given it is an All-Star game, where the concepts of defense and effort are about as unheard of as a 7-foot-6 Chinese basketball player starting at center for the Western Conference All-Stars.

Wait, we can’t say that. Houston Rockets center Yao Ming is in fact starting, making his fourth All-Star appearance this year in front of his hometown fans.

If that’s the case then there’s no reason why we can’t lay a couple of dollars down and make our Sunday night viewing that much more interesting.

With that in mind, here are a couple of things you might want to consider when betting on the NBA’s 55th All-Star game.

East plays like a beast

There’s something about this game that makes the Eastern Conference take it much more seriously than their Western Conference counterparts.

For example, take the 2001 All-Star game when the Eastern Conference came back from 21 points down to eke out a 111-110 win over the Western Conference. When that final whistle sounded they celebrated like they were the first people to discover fire.

“It was like a championship game out there,” said center Dikembe Mutombo. “I`ve been in the All-Star Game the last seven years, and I`ve never seen anything like this.”

It must come from those days when the Eastern Conference was known as the inferior conference to their Western counterparts. Well that’s all changed because the best team now resides in the East (the Detroit Pistons) as well as the best young talent (LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, etc.).

Still oddsmakers have pegged them as 4 ½-point underdogs. You can bet the East won’t take that slight too kindly.

What’s in the total?

How did oddsmakers come up with a total of 258 points?

“We just try and set a total on the basis of the players` average points, look at the motivation a little and then play with it,” says Nevin.

They also must have looked at the historical totals in this game because this number is right in line with the 261-point average we’ve seen over the last 20 All-Star games.

But there is a feeling this may be a lower scoring affair than previous years. First, there is more of a rivalry between the two conferences now that the balance of power in the NBA is more evenly balanced between the East and the West.

As well, there are several young players making their first or second appearances in the game. Quite often these players will be either too excited or too nervous and that could make for a sloppy, lower scoring basketball game.

T-Mac or A.I.: How do you spell MVP?

The MVP award is usually reserved for the highest scoring player on the winning team and in order to score you have to be on the court. So considering that, you have to think it will be a starter that will garner the MVP award.

Listening to the players talk this week, it sounds like the Western Conference players are going to try and feed hometown hero Tracy McGrady, listed at +476 to win the award.

Now McGrady has had some personal issues lately and that might have him distracted. But it may also mean that T-Mac will want to comes out on fire looking to put all the offcourt stuff behind him.

As for the Eastern Conference, Allen Iverson might be a good bet at +1340. We all know how A.I. can fill up the basket and he has been going through some issues of his own with trade rumors swirling around him while the 76ers struggle.

But Iverson always performs and maybe a third MVP trophy will be enough for him to forget about his headaches for another day.

Kobe Bryant is the favorite to take home the award at +394.
