Excessive bonuses may indeed represent a "red flag", but they are not necessarily the reason for a book to be a scam. I would says excessive UNLIMITED bonuses definitely represent a very strong warning sign.

Here is a simple answer to a simple problem.

tread with caution.  books promoted by watchdog sites are sometimes just as risky.

Obviously offering larger than normal bonuses is a good way to get money in quick, usually indicating that a book may be in financial trouble

I think you really have to look at the book's promotions and marketing as a whole, and ask "Is this operation profitable or are they doing this out of desperation?"

Some red flags for me:

Excessive bonus to existing customers (less worrisome if only directed to new customers)

Excessive contests and promotions to forum readers, especially frequent free contests (example is Gamblers Ave. right as they were going down, Fred was on the RX giving away free money almost every day)

Putting out extremely opinionated lines on high-profile (and highly bet) events. (see Aces Gold)

Overly generous perks that sharp players can take advantage of (see Aces Gold allowing a 10c buy off the 3 in NFL)
